I overheard some ladies discussing on the need to keep their vagina clean and odourless especially after their monthly periods. Each one had a fragrance or chemical she uses and explained how effective it had been over the years. Their contributions were very trilling as they had amazing stories that interested each one. They all promised to try what each has prescribed. This brings us to the topic of discussion ‘Douching’. What is douching? Douching is a French word meaning to ‘soak’ or ‘wash’ and when used in relation to the vagina means to wash or rinse the vagina cavity by forcing water or any substance into it, to flush out dirt, or vagina content. Majority of the women who douche, do so due to misinformation. Aside making the vagina feel fresh and clean, women say they douche to get rid of unpleasant odour, wash away remaining menstrual blood after their period, avoid getting sexually transmitted diseases, and prevent a pregnancy after intercourse. While most ladies feel that douching is the most perfect way to keep the vagina clean. Others think it’s the best way to avoid vaginal infection and sexually transmitted diseases. Well, that’s their little understanding of how it works but in real sense, they are doing themselves more harm than good. Although trying to keep the vagina clean externally and internally is very important, but doctors have advised against douching as it can lead to some health problems. What health issues are related to douching? For people who ask if douching can prevent douching vagina infection,No! Douching actually increases chances of contracting bacteria infection known as Bacteria Vaginosis, which is an infection in the vagina. Research has shown that women who douche are seven times prone to infection than those who do not. Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases: This is an infection in the reproductive organs that is often caused by a sexually transmitted infection (STI). It affects the fallopian tubes and ovaries when bacteria travel from the pelvis to the reproductive organ and when left untreated can lead to fertility problems. So, for those who enjoy douching, every time you douche, you are helping bacteria make entrance into your system. Ectopic pregnancy: This is when a fetus begins to develop outside the womb most times in the fallopian tube. When a woman douches after sex, the liquid carries the sperm into the fallopian tube instead of the uterus where it meets with a mature egg than has been released by the ovary. This is a serious life threatening condition as it can damage the fallopian tubes. Preterm birth: Women who douche are at risk of putting to bed earlier than scheduled, which is of great risk to the baby. How then can I clean my vagina? It is not medically advisable to douche or try to clean the vagina. The vagina has a natural way of cleaning itself by producing mucus that washes away blood, semen and vaginal discharge. If you feel your vagina has a bad smell, contact your doctor for appropriate measures.
